LANSING, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has sent a request to Indiana’s governor for the return of a convicted killer who escaped custody from a state prison last Sunday.

Michael Elliot, 40, was able to make his way out of the Ionia Correctional Facility by dressing in white and hiding from corrections officers in the snow. He used his hands to pull apart two fences in the prison’s sally port area to make his getaway. A day after a crime spree that included carjacking and abducting an Ionia woman and fleeing with her to Indiana, Elliot was captured by deputies in Indiana’s LaPorte County.

He has been exercising his right to fight extradition to Michigan.

Snyder’s request for extradition was sent Wednesday after review by Michigan’s Attorney General, a spokesperson for Snyder said. The request will likely expedite the process of getting Elliot back to Michigan.

“Typically, the Indiana governor will request his Attorney General’s Office to review the extradition request before sending it, in this case, to LaPorte County prosecutors,” said Dave Murray, Snyder’s deputy press secretary, in an email to 24 Hour News 8.

Elliot maintains that he is innocent of the four murder convictions on his record. Wednesday, one of the other men convicted in the killings told 24 Hour News 8 that Elliot had nothing to do with the murders.

As he left court last Monday, Elliot told 24 Hour News 8 that he fled to Indiana because Michigan wouldn’t give him a “second chance.”

Snyder and Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette have launched a joint investigation into the escape.

Elliot had served about 20 years of five life sentences. He has no possibility of parole.

At this point, it’s not clear when Elliot will be brought back to Michigan.
